Further Education

  • Queensland University of Technology, Vacation Research Experience Scholarship (December 2008 – February 2009): Disability Resources Wiki
The VRES program pairs final-year undergraduates with faculty members to work on a research project together, as a way to experience postgraduate work first-hand. I’m currently working on summarising and uploading resources for the Disability Studies Resources Wiki, which collects resources on disability and the arts. Our particular focus this year is on arts and well-being in relation to disability (such as arts therapy), as well as the representation of the disabled in the media.
  • Queensland University of Technology, Creative Industries (July 2006 – November 2008) : Bachelor of Creative Industries (Interdisciplinary)
I completed the Bachelor’s in Creative Industries (Interdisciplinary), submajoring in Creative Industries Management (now known as Performance Studies) and Creative Writing. The degree included courses on festivals and events management, performance history and innovation, fiction and non-fiction writing in various forms, marketing, narrative theory, cultural studies, and so on. Through this degree I did work placements and projects with the Brisbane Writers Festival, Transit Lounge Brisbane, and Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre. I was a receipient of the Dean’s Merit Scholarship in 2007 for excellence in studies, and will graduate in March 2009 with a 5.1 GPA (out of 7).
  • Limkokwing University College of Creative Technology (February 2004 – June 2005) : Foundation (Mass Communications)
I completed a Foundation (pre-university) course in Mass Communications, with classes on business writing, communications theory, marketing and advertising, and so on. I also did a semester of a Bachelor’s in Mass Communications before moving on, taking classes in film theory and journalism. While there I was quite active with managing the Clubs and Societies together with Student Services.

Training & Workshops

  • Performance
I have basic training in contemporary female vocals (IMA Brisbane), hip-hop dance, tap dance (UQ Sport), improv (Edge Improv), and beginner’s circus (Vulcana Women’s Circus). I’ve also participated in short workshops on juggling, music production, and acting. I’m a quick and dedicated learner and am always eager to pick up new skills.
  • Media
I have done short workshops on print journalism and radio presenting & production organised by media companies The Star and SAFRA Radio. I’ve also picked up media skills through work experience and university study.
  • Business
I have participated in short workshops and conferences related to business and social change, such as Edgeware Do Well conference and various Youth Enterprise Society events held by the Brisbane City Council, learning the basics of marketing, financial planning, visioning, product development, intellectual property, and so on. I have completed various TAFE-level units in business management, IT, and community development through the Navigation arts business training program.
  • Community development
The Brightest Young Minds 2008 Summit included various workshops on community organising, project management, and communications. These workshops were delivered by people involved in social change, in particular Hugh Evans, founder of the Oaktree Foundation and Young Australian of the Year. The format of BYM also allowed delegates to conduct their own workshops and meetings on various social change topics that appealed to them.
